Russell: A Place of Promise

Russell: A Place of Promise is an initiative designed to be a national model for equitable community development in African-American communities, co-created with and accountable to Russell residents. With hundreds of millions of dollars being invested in and near Russell, action is needed to ensure that existing residents and businesses share in the ownership of community outcomes and are not displaced as a result of new development. The initiative will connect Russell residents and businesses that have been the backbone of the neighborhood with opportunities to build long-term individual and community wealth, and will give residents the power to shape intentional and targeted programs, policies and structures that will be implemented in the neighborhood.

Specifically, Russell: A Place of Promise will increase homeownership among Russell residents (currently 20% of residents are home owners), provide pathways to business ownership and promote the development of cooperatives and public benefit corporations, increase educational attainment, place more Russell residents with career-path job opportunities that pay a living wage, and increase access to health services. These activities are aimed at the root causes of health, violence and social mobility/wealth accumulation.

Donations will be used to fund activities related to individual and community wealth-building in Russell.
