Thomas John Duffy Jr. (1987-2016) grew up in Louisville, KY and was a graduate of St. Xavier High School and the University Of Kentucky, College Of Engineering.  Thomas was a Civil Engineer for Walsh Construction and worked passionately on the East End Bridge Project.  Thomas was also an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed world travel, mountain climbing, and woodworking.  With a passion for his family and friends, Thomas will always be known for his strength, his smile, his intelligence, and his eternally positive and adventurous spirit.

Thomas was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma, a rare and aggressive bone cancer, in April of 2016.  With great faith, he battled for his life, receiving treatments from Norton Cancer Institute and MD Anderson Cancer Center. After the disease metastasized, his treatment options became limited and survival chances slim.  Thomas passed away in December of 2016, only 8 months after his diagnosis.

Thomas handled the adversity with courage and strength.  He never questioned why him, and he accepted the hand he was dealt as his destiny. Although he suffered great pain, he was more concerned with how everyone else around him was doing.  He continued to be the life of the party, the shining light in the room.

In his final months and weeks, Thomas expressed his desire to share his story and encourage others who had cancer. We want to honor his wishes and continue his legacy by establishing a scholarship in his name, and by leveraging resources toward finding a cure.

The Thomas J. Duffy Jr. Memorial and Scholarship Fund is a component fund of the Community Foundation of Louisville.  All donations will be directed towards rare cancer research at the MD Anderson Cancer Center and a scholarship to St. Xavier High School.
